The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on Wednesday in Abuja inaugurated an NGO known as Media and Information Literacy Coalition of Nigeria (MILCON).
The UNESCO Regional Director, Abuja Office, Mr Yao Yde, inaugurated MILCON in Abuja at the end of a two-day UNESCO train-the-trainers workshop on Media and Information Literacy (MIL).
In a communiqué signed by MILCON Interim Coordinator, Mr Chido Onumah, Yde said that MILCON would facilitate building of media and information literacy teachers in Nigeria.
He said that the workshop with the theme: “Think, Create and Share“ had urged UNESCO to involve the media in drawing up the Nigerian curriculum for dissemination purposes.
He said that the underlying principles of MIL were as enshrined in Article 19 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“While climes like Sri Lanka, China, Europe, Australia among others have adopted MIL and talks are ongoing with National Open University of Nigeria, Noun (NOUN) among others in Nigeria.
“The MIL curriculum as designed by UNESCO (tested and proven by global experts) has a total of 11 Modules covering all levels of education with provisions for flexible applicability.
“UNESCO will go through the National Teachers’ Training that generates curriculum for primary education since it has to start from basic education to make expected impact,’’ he said.
Yde suggested that the formation of UNESCO Clubs and the need for the organisation to synergise with other relevant stakeholders. (NAN)
