2 years after his illegal detention, journalist Jones Abiri’s case adjourned as DSS fails to present witnesses

After being kept behind bars illegally for over two years, journalist Jones Abiri’s court trial has been stalled and adjourned again due to absence of the complainants and ‘witnesses’ at a Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, today. The trial was adjourned to the 16th of August 2018 to enable the complainant, the DSS, ‘prepare better’.

The journalist who was arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on criminal intimidation and attempts to bomb petroleum pipelines was again handed over to the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) pending when he will be able to meet his bail terms.

His lawyer, Marshal Abubakar, applied for a varying of the bail conditions urging the court to grant the journalist leave on self-recognition.

The presiding magistrate, Chukwuemeka Nweke, adjourned the hearing for the varying of the bail terms to the 8th of August, 2018.

In an interview with the media, Mr. Abiri maintained that he knew nothing about the charges made against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).
