PTCIJ builds press attack tracker

Following the continuous victimisation of journalists in the country, the Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ) on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, held a Hackathon in its bid to build a real-time application meant for tracking of journalists who are attacked or detained in the course of carrying out their duties.

The application (App), also known as the Press Attack Tracker, was launched June 4, 2017, by PTCIJ with the aim of fighting press censorship and intimidation of journalists by public officers and high-profile individuals.

The App development was preceded by a brainstorming session which had in attendance, media practitioners, representatives of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Press Rights NGOs.

The tracker, which is likened to an emergency 911, is meant to collect as much data as needed to enable adequate and quick intervention.
AFRICMIL was represented by Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, Adedoyin Ojosipe and Abiodun James.
