Whistleblowing: AFRICMIL, YIAGA-Africa collaborate on awareness campaign

The African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (AFRICMIL) and Youth Initiative for Advocacy Growth and Advancement (YIAGA)-Africa have agreed to collaborate on winning the fight against corruption and raising awareness on the whistle blowing policy among Nigerian youths.

The agreement was reached today during a courtesy call by the AFRICMIL to YIAGA-Africa.

While AFRICMIL is presently working on a project tagged ‘Corruption Anonymous,’ an anti-corruption project that seeks to build public support for the whistleblowing policy of the Nigerian government and also advocate for its effective implementation and protection of whistleblowers, YIAGA-Africa, a youth-based not-for-profit organization which focuses on in-depth research, capacity development and public policy advocacy is also working on an anti corruption project tagged ‘Bounce Corruption’.

YIAGA Africa’s #Bounce Corruption does not only seek to establish resource platforms for effective anti-corruption campaigns and public outreach, but also seeks to promote anti corruption efforts by other stakeholders fighting against corruption and promoting public accountability.

Explaining the need for the partnership, Chido Onumah, AFRICMIL Coordinator, said the move was necessary to consolidate the anti-corruption and whistleblowing awareness campaign through every available platform that wouldp further make the fight against corruption easier.

Responding, the Executive Director, YIAGA-Africa, Samson Itodo, said the collaboration was long overdue, adding that the modalities for a smooth working relationship would be concluded as soon as possible between officials of both organisations.

Itodo stated that YIAGA-Africa is working on anti-corruption awareness campaign in universities across the country through the creation of Public Integrity Clubs, as a creative way to excite young people to act. He said this would provide AFRICMIL the opportunity to propagate the ideals of whistleblowing among the youth and deepen their engagement as well as their ability to take action.
